The potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal is the unique material which is important to high-energy optical systems due to its high quality non-linear optical performance and high laser damage threshold. However, because of its easy deliquescence, brittleness, softness and other features, it is difficult to machine and obtain an ideal crystal surface of KDP. The surface and sub-surface defects will result in great influence on the surface quality and optical performance, including laser absorption and laser damage threshold. Hence, it is critically important to develop high precision machining technologies to obtain damage-free KDP crystal components.

The aim of this special issue is to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to present and review the state-of-the-art developments, understand the major challenges, and vision on the high precision surface of KDP crystals. New processes, new tools and novel applications to obtain nearly damage-free surface/sub-surface will be explored.

   Possible topics in this issue will include but not limit to:

. Precision and ultra-precision machining technology and equipment;

. Ultra-precision surface formation and generation mechanism;

. Ultra-precision finishing without abrasives;

. Precision cleaning and surface residue/contamination detection;

. Laser damage threshold test and investigation;

. First principle calculation and simulation;

. Ultra-precision measurement method of nano/micro-scale surface defects.
