This year marks the 4th anniversary of the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing (IJEM). As we are reflecting on the major milestones and achievements in past years, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank our editors, reviewers, authors, readers, publishers and many other contributors whose passion, dedication and expertise are crucial to IJEM’s rising success.

Launched in 2019, IJEM has been widely indexed in major databases such as SCI, Ei, Scopus, DOAJ and many more. As the journal celebrated its third anniversary in 2022, it received the first impact factor of 10.036, ranking among the top (Q1) of journals in the Engineering, Manufacturing category. The indexation in these top databases enables our rigorously peer-reviewed scientific insights would be freely accessible and widely disseminated to all.

Over the past years, IJEM has earned growing recognition and trust from the global scientific community, as reflected both in the authorship and readership. We are so honored of receiving high-quality submissions from many established scientists including Nobel laureate, fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and member of the National Academy of Engineering. With open access without article processing charge, we aim to become a vibrant intellectual space for scholars in incubating saplings of their novelty, as well as fostering multidisciplinary and wide collaboration.

Recognized by major scientific and industrial media including EurekAlert!, Phys.org and Tech Xplore, we publish and promote more than 60 news stories with an average Altmetric score of over 45 in the past year. Alongside mentions in these internationally leading news outlets, our articles received more than 6000 downloads and 20 citations on average, with readers from over 100 countries. It is the testimony that our journal is dedicated to not only becoming the home for cutting-edge research in extreme manufacturing science, but also the agora for the dissemination and exchange of scientists’ voices and insights for the benefit of all.

While we strive to enhance our role within the global manufacturing community, we have defined the new Young Editorial Board to include scientists and engineers from different career stages and promote greater diversity within our community. With the wisdom and guidance from established researchers, we are incredibly proud and delighted by the opportunity to serve as the inclusive and transparent platform for next-generation researchers to advance their discovery and innovation of extreme manufacturing. We believe the establishment of the Young Editorial Board is a significant step in the right direction.

IJEM’s multidisciplinary nature encourages representation from both renowned scientists and rising stars to explore the science and technology of manufacturing functional devices and systems with extreme dimensions and/or extreme functionalities, ranging from fundamental science to cutting-edge technologies that support the manufacturing of high-performance products involving emerging techniques and breaking the limits of currently known theories, methods, scales, environments, and performance. Served as the major incubating space for advanced manufacturing knowledge, we have launched several special issues that address grand challenges of global importance such as “Femtosecond Laser Processing”, “Additive Manufacturing”, “Extreme Small/Atomic Scale Manufacturing”, “Precision/Ultra-Precision Machining and Measurement” and “Special Materials and Functional Surfaces /Devices”.

As we celebrate our fourth anniversary and look forward at the same time, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our Board members, reviewers, authors, publishers, readers and many other supporters for all their wisdom, vision and contributions. We are so lucky to have the best leaders and teachers, and we, under their great guidance, will remain vigilant and focused on the key value drivers of our journal. These include open access without article processing charge, rigorous double-anonymous peer review, fast publication after acceptance, quick responsive processing time, and free global promotion services.

As we proudly look back at and reflect on all the milestones and innovations our vibrant community has made over the last four years, we also invite you to look to the future and take the journal to the next level of excellence with your guidance and support.

With best wishes for another fruitful and joyful year to every pioneer and innovator!
